ABSTRACT

PURPOSE@#This descriptive study aimed to identify the relationships among grit, job satisfaction, and the intention to stay of clinical nurses in Korea.@*METHODS@#Data collected from a total of 239 experienced nurses in four general hospitals of the Jeolla province. The t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient were performed using the IBM SPSS/WIN 21.@*RESULTS@#There were positive correlations between the grit and job satisfaction of the nurses (r=.31, p<.001), between their grit and intention to stay (r=.25, p<.001), and between their job satisfaction and intention to stay (r=.49, p<.001).@*CONCLUSION@#Developing and adapting educational programs to enhance the grit enthusiasm, and patience can contribute to increasing the intention to stay of nurses in hospitals.

ABSTRACT

Reprogramming of human somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) enables the possibility of generating patient-specific cells. However, the low efficiency issue associated with iPSCs generation has limited iPSCs usage in research and clinical applications. In this study, we developed a high efficiency system to generate iPSCs by using a polydimethylsiloxane stencil. This device could be applied to the localization and reprogramming of human fibroblasts. Herein, a well-defined culture system based on a stencil, which supported efficient reprogramming of fibroblasts into iPSCs with 2–4 fold increase in efficacy over conventional methods, is presented. Subsequently, we prepared a multiple analysis system, which used a micro-patterned scissile microarray to characterize iPSCs. The results showed that iPSCs could be cultured into micro-patterns in a precisely controlled manner on the scissile poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheet, which was cut into pieces for subsequent analyses, indicating that this method allows multiple analyses to establish iPSC pluripotency in the same sample. Our approach provides a simple, cost-effective, but highly efficient system for the generation and characterization of iPSCs, and will serve as a powerful tool for establishing patient- and disease-specific pluripotent stem cells.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the independent factors associated with the registration rate for the community-based post suicidal care program in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted between March and December 2013 at the academic ED at the tertiary urban hospital. During the study period, the pre-designed registry was recorded. The variables examined included the following: patients' demographic data (Sex, age, address, type of insurance, marital status, level of education, and history of previous psychiatric disease), suicide-related data (suicidal methods, combined drink of alcohol and number of previous attempts), and management-related data (disposition at ED, physician's training level, etc.). Univariated and multivariated logistic regression analyses were performed for identification of factors affecting the registration rate for the community-based post suicidal care program. RESULTS: A total of 163 suicides were included during the study period. Of these, 33 (20.2%) patients were registered in the post-suicide care program. Factors including a patient's address (OR: 14.92, 95% CI: 3.606-61.711), immediate intervention by psychiatric healthcare center (OR: 5.05, CI: 1.688-15.134), admissions in hospital (OR: 3.69, CI: 1.286-10.605), and history of previous psychiatric disease (OR: 3.52, CI: 1.216-10.201) showed significant association with registration for the program. CONCLUSION: The community-based post-suicidal care program, which is available 24 hours a day, should be operated in each district in order to increase the registration rate. Emergency physicians should actively consider the inpatient treatment program for suicidal patients and strongly recommend registration to the program, particularly for patients without previous history of psychiatric disease.

ABSTRACT

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza virus are the most significant pathogens causing respiratory tract diseases. Composite vaccines are useful in reducing the number of vaccination and confer protection against multiple infectious agents. In this study, we generated fusion of RSV G protein core fragment (amino acid residues 131 to 230) and influenza HA1 globular head domain (amino acid residues 62 to 284) as a dual vaccine candidate. This fusion protein, Gcf-HA1, was bacterially expressed, purified by metal resin affinity chromatography, and refolded in PBS. BALB/c mice were intranasally immunized with Gcf-HA1 in combination with a mucosal adjuvant, cholera toxin (CT). Both serum IgG and mucosal IgA responses specific to Gcf and HA1 were significantly increased in Gcf-HA1/CT-vaccinated mice. To determine the protective efficacy of Gcf-HA1/CT vaccine, immunized mice were challenged with RSV (A2 strain) or influenza virus (A/PR/8/34). Neither detectable viral replication nor pathology was observed in the lungs of the immune mice. These results demonstrate that immunity induced by intranasal Gcf-HA1/CT immunization confers complete protection against both RSV and homologous influenza virus infection, suggesting our Gcf-HA1 vaccine candidate could be further developed as a dual subunit vaccine against RSV and influenza virus.

ABSTRACT

PUPPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine the level of pain related to a blood sugar test. Specifically, the study attempts to compare the varying degree of pains when different types of blood sugar test are used. METHOD: A sample of 56 subjects is composed of DM patients admitted to a medical ward of C university hospital in Gwangju. Data were collected from July, 2001 to December, 2001. The blood sugar tests were administered in four different ways: (1) the use of 27G needle only, (2) the use of 27G needle followed by ice-packed treatment, (3) the use of 27G needle after EMLA cream application, and (4) the use of lancet. The degree of pain is measured with a visual analogue scale and performed twice. RESULT: In both measures, the use of 27G needle only method is shown to cause the highest level of pain in comparison with the rest of methods (F=4.01, p=.01; F=8.14, p=.00). However, the differences in pain between time in all methods were not found to be significant (t=-.85, p=.40; t=.80, p=.42; t=.31, p=.75; t=.19, p=.85). CONCLUSION: The study results indicate that the method using lanceter is more recommendable than the use of 27G needle only method. Further research is needed to support the current study result with the use of different measurement scales and to determine effective methods of blood sugar test to lower pain and compliance.

ABSTRACT

Although extrahepatic metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma are frequent as about 64%, implants involving the peritoneum are rare. We presented a cases, whieh is hepatocellular carcinoma with metastasis to visceral peritoneum revealing multiple, hard, variable-sized and nodular mass including large mass over 10 cm in size. The presence of tumor was diagnosed by serum alpha fetoprotein, abdaminal CT, celiac and SMA angiography and biopsy with laparoscopy.
